Luggage Guidance

Fly customers can carry a total allowance of up to 21kg: split as 15kg hold & 6kg cabin luggage.

Fly Flex customers can carry up to 23kg hold luggage & 6kg cabin luggage.

Fly Flex + customers can carry up to 30kg* hold luggage & 6kg cabin luggage.

*Note: Single article (bag) limit – the maximum weight per bag, regardless of fare or excess luggage paid for, must not exceed 25kg.

Passengers travelling with infants may carry one pram/pushchair and 1 car seat per infant as well as their 15kg hold luggage allowance:

• Must be carried in the hold of the aircraft.
• Must be foldable

Children over 2 also are eligible to travel with our standard 15kg hold luggage. However, a pram/car seat is included within the same 15kg allowance.

Luggage allowance is a total weight of up to 15kg, across unlimited pieces.

Note: Passengers must re-check at Glasgow or Kirkwall when connecting flights.

When customers have a booking containing sectors operated by another airline on a “through-booking”, the airline with which you book will specify the luggage allowance allowed.

If you booked a journey via a Travel Agent with Loganair and one of our airline partners on a “though-booking”, the allowance is determined by whichever airline operates your longest flight sector – if in doubt, please contact your agent.

When you check-in, please ensure:

• Your luggage is secure
• It is labelled with your name and destination address, and that old destination labels are removed
• It is labelled with your name and destination address, and that old destination labels are removed
• You do not pack medication, important documents, valuable items or cash in your checked luggage and never carry unidentified luggage for other people

Connections

If you are connecting onto another flight, and are issued with transit boarding cards, your luggage will be checked through to your final destination. However if returning to the UK, your luggage will need to be collected at the last airport which has customs clearance and you will be required to clear customs before re-dropping your bag for your final destination.

Passengers are not permitted to carry the following articles in their hold baggage:

Explosives and incendiary substances and devices – explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable of being used to cause serious injury or to pose a threat to the safety of aircraft, including:

1. Ammunition
2. Blasting caps
3. Detonators and fuses
4. Mines, grenades and other explosive military stores
5. Fireworks and other pyrotechnics
6. Smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges
7. Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives

Loganair offers a free checked baggage allowance with every fare, and one additional piece of hold luggage, with a weight of up to 15kg, may be booked for an additional £25 online via Manage My Booking. Requests via third party agents, or via the Loganair Customer Help Centre phone lines are charged at an additional £30.

Due to aircraft constraints, additional luggage cannot be prebooked for flights to/from Barra, Campbeltown, Tiree or within the Orkney Isles.

• Fly and Fly Flex customers can carry a bag up to 6kg free of charge, plus a small handbag.
• Fly Flex + customers can carry a bag up to 6kg free of charge, plus a small handbag and slimline laptop bag.

General Information 

In addition to the checked luggage allowance, you may carry personal items as cabin luggage. The cabin luggage must be labelled at check-in, weigh under 6 kg, and not exceed dimensions of 40cm x 35cm x 18cm i.e. to fit in an overhead bin or under your seat. On certain flights it may be necessary to put cabin luggage in the hold, and it will be returned to you at the bottom of the steps on arrival.

Loganair recommends passengers include important documents, cash, valuables, medication and laptops in their cabin luggage. Loganair recommends passengers do not carry items which are considered a security risk in their cabin luggage, for we cannot accept liability for items removed by airport security staff.

List of prohibited articles that cannot be carried in the aircraft cabin

Passengers are not permitted to carry the following articles into security restricted areas and on board an aircraft:

Guns, firearms and other devices that discharge projectiles – devices capable, or appearing capable, of being used to cause serious injury by discharging a projectile, including:

• Firearms of all types, such as pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns
• Toy guns, replicas and imitation firearms capable of being mistaken for real weapons
• Component parts of firearms, excluding telescopic sights
• Compressed air and CO2 guns, such as pistols, pellet guns, rifles and ball bearing guns
• Signal flare pistols and starter pistols
• Signal flare pistols and starter pistols
• Bows, cross bows and arrows
• Harpoon guns, spear guns, slingshots and catapults

Stunning devices – devices designed specifically to stun or immobilise, including:

• Devices for shocking, such as stun guns, tasers and stun batons
• Animal stunners and animal killers
• Disabling and incapacitating chemicals, gases and sprays, such as mace, pepper sprays capsicum sprays, tear gas, acid sprays and animal repellent sprays

Objects with a sharp point or sharp edge – objects with a sharp point or sharp edge capable of being used to cause serious injury, including:

• Items designed for chopping, such as axes, hatchets and cleavers
• Ice axes, ice picks, razor blades and box cutters
• Knives with blades of more than 6cm
• Scissors with blades of more than 6cm as measured from the fulcrum
• Martial arts equipment with a sharp point or sharp edge
• Swords and sabres

Workmen’s tools – tools capable of being used either to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of aircraft, including:

• Crowbars, Drills and drill bits, including cordless portable power drills
• Tools with a blade or a shaft of more than 6cm capable of use as a weapon, such as screwdrivers and chisels
• Saws, including cordless portable power saws
• Blowtorches, bolt guns and nail guns

Blunt instruments – objects capable of being used to cause serious injury when used to hit, including:

• Baseball and softball bats
• Clubs and batons, such as billy clubs, blackjacks and night sticks
• Martial arts equipment

Explosives and incendiary substances and devices – explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable, or appearing capable, of being used to cause serious injury or to pose a threat to the safety of aircraft, including:

• Ammunition
• Blasting caps
• Detonators and fuses
• Replica or imitation explosive devices
• Mines, grenades and other explosive military stores
• Fireworks and other pyrotechnics
• Smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges
• Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives

There are restrictions on sports equipment and musical instrument carriage by type and quantity, and these also differ by aircraft type. For this reason, you're advised to book your item in advance via our Customer Help Centre on 0344 800 2855.

A summary of restrictions are as follows:

Should space not be available on a given flight, your equipment will be carried on the next available flight, again subject to space, and it is your responsibility to collect your equipment from the airport on arrival.

Golf Equipment

If you intend carrying your clubs as part of your luggage allowance, please call the call centre so we can add golf clubs to your booking, furthermore if intending to take golf clubs in addition to your checked-luggage allowance, please also call the call centre so golf clubs can be added to your booking.

There is a fixed charge of £30 per sector for the carriage of golf clubs. This is included in the cost of the day away golf packages to Machrihanish.

Defined as one bag containing not more than 14 clubs, one dozen balls and one pair of golf shoes. There is a limit to the number of sets that can be carried on each aircraft

Golf groups requiring more than the permitted amount of clubs on one flight (i.e. more than 8 sets) may arrange to take the clubs at least 24 hours in advance to the departing airport to be shipped prior to the group departing. In such cases, contact Loganair on 0344 800 2855.

Bicycles

There is a fixed charge of £30 per sector for the carriage of bicycles.

Loganair cannot carry bicycles on their Islander or Twin Otter aircraft. Please advise the reservations agent when making your booking that you intend to carry a bicycle.

When travelling with a bicycle, deflate both tyres, lower the handlebars and place them in line with the frame, and invert or remove the pedals. You should, of course, allow additional time to make these adjustments.

Fishing Tackle

There is a fixed charge of £30 per sector for the carriage of fishing tackle.

Defined as one tackle box, haversack, angler’s Basket and one rod bag or box. Tackle boxes must be carried in the hold, and under no circumstances will fishing Baskets containing live maggots be accepted for travel. Fishing rods may be accepted as cabin baggage.

Sporting Guns and Ammunition

There is a fixed charge of £30 per sector for the carriage of sporting guns.

Firearms and ammunition will only be accepted for carriage as checked baggage, and never as cabin baggage. Such firearms must be unloaded. When ammunition is carried, a written declaration must be made by the passenger, confirming that the ammunition is packed in a strong outside container, made of wood, metal or fibreboard, and that inside the container, the ammunition is protected against shock and secured against movement. The declaration must also confirm that no more than 5kg are contained in any one piece of checked baggage. Ammunition with explosive or incendiary projectiles is totally prohibited for carriage by air.

Scuba Diving Equipment

There is a fixed charge of £30 per sector for the carriage of scuba diving equipment.

Defined as an empty scuba air tank, air supply regulator and pressure gauge, air tank harness, face mask, pair of diving fins, snorkel, knife, speargun, air pistol and life jacket, any or all of which must be securely packed in one bag. Please always advise the reservations agent that you intend carrying scuba diving equipment.

Snow ski equipment

There is a fixed charge of £30 per sector for the carriage of ski equipment.

Consists of the following:

• One pair of skis
• One pair of ski poles
• One pair of ski boots

These items may only be accepted as checked baggage. Ski poles and skis must be securely fastened together, with points and sharp edges padded to prevent damage to other luggage. Ski boots cannot be carried in the cabin under any circumstances as they may hinder an emergency evacuation

Musical Instruments - Packing Instructions

When a stringed instrument is transported by air, it may be exposed to dramatic changes in temperature and pressure, which can cause the instrument’s headstocks to crack or snap off. To prevent possible damage, it is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the strings are loosened so that the tension is reduced.

Musical instruments should always be properly packaged in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping such items. For transport in the aircraft hold soft cases are unacceptable and could be refused at check-in.

Musical Instruments as Carry-on Baggage

You may bring your musical instrument on board as part of your carry-on baggage provided it meets the current Loganair carry-on baggage limitations (please see 'Cabin Luggage' information above) and:

• Fits in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you, or
• You purchase a seat to accommodate it*

*note - Dependant on the size and shape of the specific instrument for transport, this option may not be possible. Please get in touch with our Help Centre for more information.  

Purchasing a Seat for your Musical Instrument

If you wish to purchase a seat for your musical instrument to accommodate the instrument in the same cabin you are travelling in contact Loganair Reservations on 0344 800 2855

Also for safety reasons, extra seats may be purchased for musical instruments not exceeding 145 cm in height/length or 32 kg in weight. The number of musical instruments that can be accommodated on each flight is limited.

Note: Please see the General Conditions of Carriage. It is in the passenger's own interests to ensure that they have adequate travel insurance or insurance which specifically covers the item(s) that are carried onboard or within the aircraft hold.

Passengers may take through airport security liquids such as toiletries including:

• Perfume
• Toothpaste
• Deodorant
• Shaving foam
• Lip gloss

Please ensure that vessels holding liquids contain no more than 100ml each.

All individual liquid items must fit comfortably into one transparent, re-sealable bag no larger than 1 litre or approximately 20cm x 20cm (about the size of a small freezer bag). The bag must fit into either your cabin bag or your additional under seat cabin bag but will be asked to present the bag separately when going through airport security.

Prohibited articles

Prohibited articles include sharp items such as scissors, knives of any description. Tools and sharp accessories including screwdrivers, imitation toy guns, hypodermic needles, sporting equipment or any items which may be considered to be a safety risk to the passengers or crew, are prohibited from the aircraft cabin and must be packed.

To ensure the safety of their aircraft and all those on board, passengers’ checked in hold luggage or cabin bag must not contain articles or substances that could pose a danger (some exemptions apply), these include: Batteries can short circuit and catch fire if they are carried loose in your bag. They must be protected against contact with other metal items (e.g. by being in their original packaging or own protective case) and carried in your cabin bag. Equipment containing such batteries should be carried in your cabin bag.

Lithium Batteries

The term “lithium battery” refers to a family of batteries with different chemistries, comprising of many types of cathodes and electrolytes. They are separated into:

• Lithium metal batteries generally non-rechargeable batteries that have lithium metal or lithium compounds as an anode. Lithium metal batteries are generally used to power devices such as watches, calculators, cameras, temperature data loggers.
• Lithium-ion batteries(sometimes abbreviated Li-ion batteries) a type of rechargeable battery commonly used in consumer electronics. Also included within lithium-ion batteries are lithium polymer batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are generally found in mobile telephones, laptop computers, etc.

General Requirements

General provisions applying to both lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries:

It is recommended that Personal Electronic Devices containing lithium batteries be carried in carry-on baggage. However, if this is not possible and they are in checked baggage, measures must be taken to prevent their unintentional activation.

Spare batteries (i.e., those not contained in a Personal Electronic Devices ) MUST be:

• in carry-on baggage; they are forbidden in checked baggage
• protected against short circuit, such as by
• leaving the batteries in original retail packaging;
• placing them separately in a plastic bag, such as those supplied at airport security points for liquids and gels; or
• taping the exposed terminals

Dangerous goods which cannot be taken onto an aircraft

If you check in with dangerous goods that fit into category 1 or 2 without prior notification they will be requested to be removed by airline staff or security officers under guidelines issued by the Department for Transport and Civil Aviation Authority.

• Corrosives materials– acids, alkalis, wet cell batteries, etc.
• Disabling devices– such as mace, pepper spray, etc.
• Electro shock weapons– (e.g. Tasers) – containing dangerous goods such as explosives, compressed gases. Lithium batteries, etc.
• Explosives– fireworks, flares, etc.
• Blasting Caps
• Detonators and Fuses
• Mines, grenades, and other explosive military stores
• Fireworks and other pyrotechnics
• Smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges
• Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives
• Flammable gas cylinders
• Flammable liquids– paint, petrol, lighter refills, solvents, varnish, etc.
• Flammable solids– firelighters, etc.
• Oxidising materials– bleach, peroxides, some fertilisers, etc.
• Strike anywhere matches
• Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
• Substances that emit flammable gases in contact with water
• Toxic (poisonous) substances – weed killer, insecticides, etc.

Dangerous goods for which you require Loganair approval to carry them on the aircraft.

The following list covers the items that can be carried on flights with Loganair, they will require the airline’s approval prior to flying:

• Avalanche rescue pack
• Camping stoves and fuel containers (empty and purged)
• Ammunition in checked baggage (Max 5kgs gross weight per Passenger: inclusive of ammo and storage container)
• Heat-producing articles – underwater torches, soldering irons, etc.
• Non-flammable gas cylinder – as part of a life-jacket or SCUBA gear
• Oxygen and other small cylinders for medical use
• Electric Mobility Aids
• Portable medical electronic devices containing lithium metal batteries exceeding 2 grams but not exceeding 8 grams (and spare batteries of such equipment)
• Self-inflating personal safety devices such as a life-jacket and small cartridges for other devices
• Dry ice (no more than 2.5 kg per person)
• Security-type equipment, such as attaché cases, cash boxes, cash bags, etc., incorporating dangerous goods as part of this equipment, for example, lithium batteries or pyrotechnic material

Items which are deemed dangerous or may affect the safety of the aircraft and/or its occupants will be confiscated. If you have any doubts regarding the suitability of an item, please contact the Customer Call Centre for further advice.

Please be reminded that all passengers are not to accept articles of baggage from other persons, and not to leave baggage unattended. Please contact a member of staff at the airport if you are given articles to carry for another person, or if you have not been able to keep your baggage under constant supervision.

Whilst Loganair and its service providers make every effort to ensure your luggage is handled with care, you should know Loganair’s liability for loss, delay or damage to Baggage is limited unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges paid.

The extent of the airline’s liability is based on the weight of the luggage and not its value.

Loganair does not accept liability for fragile, valuable, perishable articles or Baggage which is packed in damaged or unsuitable containers.

Loganair strongly recommends all passengers obtain adequate travel cover prior to their journey.

Under the Conditions of Carriage (on the reverse of the passenger coupon of your ticket or from your local Loganair ticket office) we accept no liability for the loss of jewellery, other valuables and money contained in checked baggage. You are advised to keep valuables, important documents and money either on your person or in your cabin baggage.

If your baggage is damaged or has not arrived with you, please get in touch with Loganair’s ground handling staff immediately at your destination airport for assistance.

Details of your luggage will be taken; if applicable, you will be authorised to purchase essential items of a given monetary value. If your baggage has been delayed, arrangements will be made to deliver it to your local address when it arrives.

• Delayed Baggage - please create or update a file via our online portal.
• Damaged Baggage - please complete this online form and select 'I have a damaged bag' from the drop down menu.

In both situations, of either damaged or delayed baggage, liability could be reduced if the luggage was presented for check-in unsuitably packed or after the recommended check-in time.
