Long, long ago, Norwich was the second city of England, a medieval powerhouse of trade, prosperity, soaring architecture and cobbled streets bustling with creative, dynamic people. The Romanesque Cathedral and the Castle are wonders
The latter home is to one million exhibits and offers stunning views from the battlements. Elm Hill is a complete street of Tudor Buildings and merchants’ houses (and coffee shops and tea rooms); Plantation Garden is a secret Victorian treasure. Norwich Market is Europe’s largest permanent market but look up from the stalls and take in the Guildhall, St Peter Mancroft Church and the Forum.
Discover more culture in award-winning museums and visit the Sainsbury Centre to see works by Picasso, Degas, Moore and Bacon. Every May the city hosts its major arts festival and shopping culture is also thriving – two malls, countless independent stores and the splendid Jarrolds Department Store testify to that. To relax, sip a beer or two: sunny Norfolk grows fabulous barley and you’ll find microbreweries galore to prove it.
Out of Norwich lie the legendary Norfolk Broads, a wild reach of lakes, fens and waterways. Norfolk Airport gives you the ideal jumping-off spot for the county and its wondrous coast, a paradise for walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers and just about everyone. Norwich Market
Norwich Market is an attractive and vibrant mix of food, crafts, flowers, services and much more. One of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in the country, it has 189 stalls trading Monday to Saturday, with some open on Sundays.
Norfolk Broads
Did you know the Norfolk Broads has more miles of waterway than Venice and Amsterdam!? Well-known for boating holidays, they do say the best way to explore the secret spots of the Broads National Park is via boat! However, there are also plenty of activities for the full family on dry land such as cycling, Bure Valley Railway and horse riding centres.
