Travel to Dundee

Great little city with designs on your enjoyment

Set on the south-facing banks of the silvery River Tay, Dundee looks out onto the wide world with remarkable views on creativity, imagination and above all, design.

Once the city of jam, jute and journalism, such is Dundee’s new renown for design it became the UK’s inaugural UNESCO City of Design. Here it was that comic icons such as Dennis the Menace, Oor Wullie and other timeless characters first appeared – there’s a statue of Desperate Dan to prove it.

Explore shops and restaurants, museums ...

The V&A opened the doors of its amazing museum on the waterfront in 2018, first of its kind outside London (launching Dundee straight onto National Geographic Channel’s ‘cool list’). Moored next door is the legendary ship Discovery, which took Captain Scott and his crew to the Antarctic – venture on board and see how these Victorian heroes sailed into history.

Explore shops and restaurants, museums and cafes to your heart’s content, pausing for tea and toast (with Dundee Marmalade of course), then follow the Dundee Treasure Trail, a self-guided meander past places of interest. Take in modern art at Dundee Contemporary Art centre and go back in time at the 500-year-old Old Steeple, which offers memorable panoramas … if you don’t mind 232 steps to the top. Out of town, Broughty Ferry has shore walks, historic fishermen’s cottages and two castles nearby.

Dundee is the city of the poet acknowledged as the world’s worst – William Topaz McGonnagal, infamous for his epic The Tay Bridge Disaster. Do come and see Bonnie Dundee.

V&A Dundee

V&A Dundee opened in September 2018 on the city’s waterfront. It’s the first design museum in Scotland and the first Victoria and Albert museum outside London. The V&A Dundee is also the first building in the United Kingdom that has been designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

Swing away

Known as the 'Cradle of Golf' Dundee and the surrounding areas are home to some of Scotland's best courses. The spectacular countryside and scenic coast make it the perfect place to swing away. The famous Open Championship links courses at St Andrews and Carnoustie are only 15 miles away from Dundee Airport!
