Will the charge really cover a carbon offset for my Loganair flight

Unlike voluntary carbon offset schemes offered by some airlines or third parties, which can vary significantly in price, our carbon offset programme will involve every single Loganair customer. By working together, we can leverage our collective power to ensure the cost of carbon offsets remains modest and affordable for each individual passenger.

This collaborative approach means that our efforts to reduce emissions will be more impactful, while still keeping the costs manageable for our customers. Together, we can make a real difference in helping achieve our sustainability goals.

Where does the money go?

To ensure we are doing our part in reducing our environmental impact, the charge for carbon offsets will go directly towards fully offsetting the carbon emissions generated from every single Loganair flight. While we are already making strides by renewing our fleet with the ATR42 and ATR72—the most fuel-efficient regional aircraft available—achieving zero carbon emissions at the source is still a developing technology.

Safety is our top priority, and we can only deploy new zero-carbon technologies once they are fully proven and certified by aviation safety regulators. This ensures that we prioritize safety for our passengers while also striving for sustainability.

Until 2024, when we anticipate the first truly low-carbon airliners to become available, we are participating in global environmental projects. These projects will offset the carbon equivalent of each Loganair flight by saving carbon emissions elsewhere, helping us manage and mitigate our impact as we move towards our ultimate goal of zero-carbon flying. This is an important early step in our commitment to a sustainable future for air travel.

How does carbon offsetting work?

As part of our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality, the carbon offset charges collected from our customers will be invested in global projects that remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere. These projects are designed to counterbalance the emissions generated by our flights.

Some examples of the initiatives we support include:

  • Wind farm projects: These replace coal- and gas-fired power stations, providing cleaner, renewable energy to communities.
  • Reforestation efforts: Involving the development of carbon-absorbing trees and plantations, these projects contribute to reducing atmospheric CO2 while enhancing biodiversity and ecosystems.

These projects are primarily located in developing countries beyond the EU, where they can make the greatest positive environmental and social impact. By participating in these initiatives, we are taking meaningful steps toward global sustainability while supporting communities in need.

Can I opt out of paying the new charge?

At Loganair, we believe that everyone has a role to play in protecting our environment, and only by working together can we make a real difference. That's why we’ve introduced a new carbon offset charge, which will be included in every Loganair fare, transparently displayed when you book.

When you see a flight priced at £89, this is the total price you will pay, which covers:

  • Your fare
  • Airport/government taxes
  • The carbon offset for your flight

As you proceed with your booking, you will see the carbon offset charge itemised separately in your shopping basket, ensuring full transparency in how your contribution is helping to reduce the environmental impact of your journey. By including this charge in every fare, we make it easier for all our customers to participate in reducing carbon emissions and support a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Will the charge increase in future?

Today, we’re taking an important step towards a sustainable future with our carbon offset program, which is part of our broader commitment to reducing the environmental impact of flying. While we are starting with this charge to offset carbon emissions from our flights, we know that the cost of carbon offsets can change over time. As the market evolves, we may need to adjust this charge to ensure we continue to meet our environmental commitments and maintain our efforts towards a Net Zero future.

This is just the beginning of our journey, and we will continue to make decisions that prioritize the long-term health of our planet. Through collective action and continued investment in carbon offset projects, we aim to significantly reduce the environmental impact of flying.

If my ticket is booked through a third party such as for hospital patient travel or through a business travel agreement, will I need to separately pay the carbon charge myself?

Since the carbon offset charge is already being included in the arrangements with key customers, no further action is needed from your side. All customers will automatically have this environmental contribution included in their booking, making it easier for everyone to participate in this important initiative without any extra steps required.

If I already have confirmed flights with Loganair, will I now be expected to pay an extra charge for my flight?

No. If you have an existing booking with us for future travel, we’ll ensure that the carbon emissions from your flight are fully offset without you needing to take any action. We won’t ask you to pay any surcharge for a booking you’ve already made.

Why haven't you just included this in fares?

Transparency is key in helping customers understand the environmental impact of their travel. By itemising the carbon offset charge separately, you're not only making the environmental cost clear but also encouraging broader industry participation. It's great that you're setting an example for others, including ferry and rail operators, to follow suit in providing clearer insights into the environmental footprint of their services.

If I am using a Loganair flight to connect to a flight operated by another airline, does this mean that the emissions for my entire journey are offset?

Since different airlines have varying approaches to sustainability and carbon offsetting, it’s important for passengers to check with the airline operating their onward flight. Encouraging passengers to stay informed about these initiatives helps them make more environmentally-conscious decisions for the entirety of their journey.

If you’re concerned about the environment yet your flights are so short, why are you even flying? Shouldn’t people be using other forms of transport?

Flying, in some cases, can be more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport, particularly when considering the emissions of ferries and long car journeys. Loganair’s initiative is important because it recognizes the role of aviation in the overall transport sector's environmental impact and aims to reduce it where possible. By offsetting the carbon emissions for every flight, Loganair is setting a strong example of responsibility within the industry, encouraging others to follow suit, and providing customers with more sustainable travel options. It’s crucial that all transport sectors take steps towards sustainability to make a collective difference in reducing global carbon footprints.

What about the non-carbon emission impacts of flying? How will offsetting help with this?

Loganair is proactively addressing the issue of contrails and their potential impact on the climate. While the majority of the fleet operates at lower altitudes, reducing the likelihood of contrail formation, the work with a climate science technology company to predict and avoid areas where contrails might form is an excellent initiative. This proactive flight planning strategy shows a commitment to further reducing the environmental footprint of aviation. By continuously investing in innovative solutions, Loganair can lead the way in mitigating both direct and indirect emissions from air travel, contributing to the broader goal of achieving sustainability in aviation.

Will the carbon offset charge apply on Public Service Obligation flights?

By offsetting the carbon emissions on your very short Orkney Islands flights and aiming for the first commercial services powered by alternative fuel sources, Loganair is setting a strong example of innovation in sustainable aviation. These steps demonstrate a clear commitment to reducing the environmental impact of flying, particularly in regions where alternative fuel solutions can have a significant positive effect.

So when do you expect to be flying electrical or hydrogen-powered flights?

The flight trials with alternative propulsion technologies, supported by Loganair from its Kirkwall base, mark a key step in the aviation industry’s journey towards sustainable air travel. Working with companies like Ampaire and ZeroAvia, who are pioneering electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, shows Loganair’s dedication to exploring innovative solutions for reducing carbon emissions in aviation. These trials are part of a larger effort to demonstrate the viability of low-emission propulsion systems for regional flights, which could play a major role in making air travel more sustainable in the future.

Why are carbon offset projects not in Scotland and the UK?

Loganair is committed to ensuring that its carbon offset programme meets the highest international standards, so customers can trust that their contributions are having a real impact on reducing carbon emissions. While the current EU (and UK) rules for carbon offsets exclude certain local projects, such as reforestation efforts in Scotland, Loganair remains open to including these initiatives in the future should the rules change. This demonstrates the airline's ongoing dedication to supporting both global and local environmental efforts, ensuring that their offset programme continues to evolve in line with the latest regulations and sustainability goals.

Will the carbon emissions from all Loganair flights for the cargo, oil & gas and charter sectors also be offset?

Yes.

Is Loganair considering other new per-ticket charges or changes to fund environmental initiatives or any other items?

No.
