Identification Requirements for Flights Within Great Britain

For all domestic flights within Great Britain, a government-issued photographic ID is required when checking in luggage. Accepted IDs include:

  • A valid passport (an expired passport may be used up to five years after expiry)
  • Valid photographic driving license (provisional or full)
  • Young Scot Card
  • Bus pass

Note: Please ensure the photograph on your ID is a recent likeness.

Identification Requirements for Flights Between Great Britain, the Common Travel Area (CTA), and Northern Ireland

Travel Between Ireland and Great Britain

British or Irish citizens are not required to present a passport to a Border Force officer but may need a document to confirm identity and nationality, such as:

  • A valid passport or passport card (Irish citizens)
  • A copy of a passport or passport card with visible identity details
  • An expired passport (if verified by Border Force as originally issued to the individual)
  • Proof of British or Irish citizenship

For customers checking in luggage, a government-issued photographic ID is required.

Travel Between the Crown Dependencies and the UK

Additional requirements may apply when traveling from the Crown Dependencies, such as the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. For updated requirements, visit GOV.UK.

Child Identification

Children traveling on domestic flights are not required to present ID when accompanied by an adult. For unaccompanied travelers aged 12-15 checking in a bag, ID will be required.

Identification Requirements for International Flights

All international travelers must have a valid passport and ensure any relevant visas are secured.

Special Notice - EU/EEA or Swiss Citizens Traveling to the UK from October 1, 2021

Starting October 1, an EU/EEA or Swiss National ID card will no longer be accepted for travel to the UK. A valid passport is required unless travelers:

  • Have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme and await a decision (excluding family members joining sponsors)
  • Possess an EU Settlement Scheme family permit, Frontier Worker permit, S2 Healthcare Visitor status, or Swiss Service Provider status

Irish citizens may continue to use a passport card. For further information, visit GOV.UK.

Important Notice for British Airways Customers (Effective September 1, 2023)

British Airways now requires valid photographic identification for all UK domestic flights. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid driving license (provisional or full)
  • EU national ID card
  • Armed Forces ID card
  • Police warrant card or badge

Identification is not mandatory for children under 16 on domestic flights, provided an accompanying adult presents photographic ID. Unaccompanied children aged 14 and 15 must carry identification.
