Children’s hospice team pay special visit to Shetland family

Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) brought their vital services to Shetland recently to provide a family with a weekend to cherish. CHAS nurses Michelle Milne and Beth Main visited the Morris family, who began using the hospice’s services this year.

The pair made their trip courtesy of Loganair, which has been the organisation’s official airline partner since 2021. Loganair works to ensure that CHAS remains connected with families who require their support but are located in remote communities, just like the Morris family.

Young Harrison Morris, 13, has been living with an inherited disorder known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) since he was four years old. The condition has caused Harrison to develop neuromuscular scoliosis, which affects his spine. As a result, Harrison lost the ability to walk at the age of nine. For his parents Louise and Steve, CHAS services are a lifeline.

The Morris family were first exposed to the amazing support that CHAS can offer when they stayed at Rachel House Children’s Hospice in Kinross in April this year. They were taken aback by the dedication of CHAS nurses, who went above and beyond to tend to Harrison’s every need.

The family were thrilled with their latest visit, as Michelle and Beth took Harrison out for a weekend to remember. They spent time in the Shetland sunshine, visiting the scenic Eshaness, The Cake Fridge Cafe, and the Shetland Museum & Archives. Harrison’s personal highlight was the offerings of the local chip van.

Michelle Milne, Senior Nursing Support Worker at CHAS, said:

“Being able to have the opportunity to support Harrison and his family with the help from Loganair has been amazing. Beth and I would like to thank Loganair for making this happen.

“The visit allowed the parents to go out and have time together, and Harrison enjoyed showing us the sights in Shetland.”

Luke Lovegrove, Loganair’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:

“It was a privilege for Loganair to help facilitate CHAS’s trip to Shetland, and I was pleased to hear that it had such a positive impact on the Morris family. This is exactly why Loganair continues to support CHAS and the wonderful work it does.”
