Travel to Alesund

Architecture, fjords, adventure

If an art nouveau town within shouting distance of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords isn’t enough to make you want to fly to Alesund, a first glimpse of its famous architecture will certainly seal the deal.

The lively town offers stunning coastal views while thrill-seekers will fulfil their cravings for adventure when they hear about the kayaking, hiking, skiing or climbing trials in the mountains overlooking the city.

Hop-on-hop-off

A hop-on-hop-off bus runs daily for anyone wishing to hear a little more about the town’s extensive history, stopping at sights which include Sunmore Museum, Aksla Viewpoint, Parken Culture Centre, the famous city centre, Alesund Church, and the Norwegian Aquarium.

Meanwhile, only a couple of hours drive inland you can explore Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage S-shaped fjord famous for its towering waterfalls and unspoilt beauty.

For a truly unforgettable experience, look out for tour providers offering night-time skiing excursions to the Sunnmøre Alps. What better way to hit the Norwegian slopes than by moonlight with a 1000-lumen headtorch illuminating the snow beneath your skis, escorted down the mountain by an experienced guide.

The perfect combination of city breaks and outdoor activities, Alesund is the ideal base to explore some of the country’s best known natural and cultural attractions.

Decimated by fire...

... during the early hours of the morning more than a hundred years ago, almost 850 of the city’s houses were destroyed in a matter of hours. However, the local community, with help generously donated by countries across Europe, turned tragedy into triumph as one of Norway’s finest architectural achievements - Alesund’s Art Nouveau architecture - was borne as a result.

The Summer Party

The Summer Party (Sommerfesten) on the island of Giske is a festival out of the ordinary. There’s no set price, you decide how much you want to contribute with at the entrance. Children's activities are held during daytime, while the national and international artists enter the stages in the evening.
