New Western Isles service

Flybe franchise carrier Loganair has expanded its Western Isles operations with the introduction of a new one-stop, twice daily (Monday to Friday) link between Benbecula and Inverness.
The new flights, introduced at the end of May, have been made possible after Scotland’s airline secured an interim contract to operate Stornoway to Benbecula services on behalf of Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar.
The twice weekday inter-island flights have been linked to Loganair’s existing Inverness-Stornoway services to enable customers to remain on the aircraft during the short transit stop at Stornoway for the first time.
Jonathan Hinkles, Loganair’s commercial director, said: “The journey time is 1 hour and 40 minutes, which represents a substantial time and cost saving not to mention a massive improvement in convenience for customers who were used to having to change aircraft at Stornoway.
“Remaining on the aircraft at Stornoway also cuts the fare by almost £30 return thanks to saving the airport fees which would otherwise be incurred.
“We are sure that this will be welcomed by customers travelling for medical treatment, those visiting friends and relatives, and business travellers flying between Inverness and the Uists.”
Weekday flights to Benbecula depart from Inverness at 7.50am and 2pm, whilst return flights leave Benbecula at 10am and 4pm.
Mr Hinkles added: “The new service also creates more convenient, direct links between Barra and Inverness through daily connections via Benbecula. It’s now possible for passengers to check-in at Barra or Inverness, collect their boarding cards and check-in their bags for their entire journey for the first time.”
Flights from Inverness to Benbecula and from Stornoway to Benbecula can be booked via www.flybe.com until August 31, 2010.
Fares from Inverness to Benbecula start from £54.99 one-way, including all taxes, fee and charges. For Western Isles residents who are members of the Air Discount Scheme (ADS), the fare from Benbecula to Inverness starts from £38.90.
