WORLD’S SHORTEST SCHEDULED FLIGHT RETURNS TO ORKNEY

Visitors to the Orkney Islands will be able to enjoy a unique aerial sightseeing trip this summer thanks to Loganair, Scotland’s Airline.

The airline is offering tourists the chance to take the world’s shortest scheduled flight between two of the islands, covering a distance shorter than the main runway at Edinburgh Airport and lasting just two minutes.

Loganair, which has operated the Orkney inter-island service since 1967, began offering the flight last year following feedback from customers keen to include the island-hopping trip in their travel plans.

The move proved so popular with visitors that Loganair is offering an extended season for summer 2011 running from June to early September, with an additional morning service every Saturday.

Flights will leave Kirkwall mid-morning on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for the 45-minute roundtrip which includes landing and take-off at Westray and Papa Westray and the world’s shortest scheduled flight itself. The services are operated by eight-seat Islander aircraft, which fly in the colours of local Orkney whisky distillery Highland Park.

Sightseer journeys can be booked in advance on these flights at a cost of £39.00 per person return, which includes a commemorative certificate and a miniature of Highland Park whisky.

Loganair also operates Orkney’s external air services, linking the islands to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Shetland, through its franchise agreement with Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline.

Trips on the world’s shortest scheduled flight can be booked by calling Loganair’s Orkney Inter-Isles reservations team on 01856 873457 and further details can be found at www.loganair.co.uk.   There may also be limited availability on other flights for sightseer trips which can only be booked on the day of departure.
