Southampton

Cruise capital of northern Europe

Southampton has a rich maritime history with notable naval episodes including the departure of the Mayflower with the Pilgrim Fathers in their expedition to the New World, and the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. Today, it's still one of Europe's largest commercial ports, and home to the majestic cruise liners which set sail around the world making Southampton synonymous with cruising. Its naval pride is equally showcased in September with the annual PSP Southampton Boat Show, a nautical extravaganza with over 1,000 vessels berthed in the marina.

Hampshire’s largest city has been transformed into a thriving 21st century cultural destination, and enjoys a vibrant arts scene, powered by the city’s two universities, the University of Southampton, and Southampton Solent University. There are several top-class arts and cultural venues including the Guildhall and the Mayflower Theatre, hosting live music events, good dining in traditional ‘ye olde English’ pubs, as well as this riverside metropolis offering a lively nightlife scene.

Southampton is described as the greenest city in southern England with lots of open green space, lovely parks with traditional bandstands, fountains, and rose gardens, as well as it being in close proximity to England’s smallest national park, the New Forest, which represents 'England's green and pleasant land' status. The port city also serves as the gateway for the iconic British destination, the Isle of Wight, England's largest island.

Its coastal location means 'messing about' on boats and relaxing by the waterfront are key past times for Sotonians or visitors alike. But for land lubbers, the nearby New Forest offers stunning walking trails showcasing rural England at its most glorious. Walking pace steps up to a march as Southampton FC fans support their beloved Saints at St Mary's Stadium on their turbulent football journey.

Whether it's the city's nautical pedigree and location as a cruise port of call, it's forward looking arts scene, green space, or the fact the New Forest and the Isle of Wight are on its doorstep, Southampton is bound to offer something that floats your boat.
